Young people joined forces with professional performers to get The Lyric Lounge off to a flying start in Stamford.

Nine members of Stamford Senior Youth Theatre spent weeks preparing for The Lyric Lounge festival held at Mama Liz’s Voodoo Lounge on Saturday July 23.

The atmospheric setting helped to get the best out of the performers. The young people shared pieces they had created themselves using Stamford Museum as the inspiration to reflect on past and present.

Performance poets Adisa and Hannah Jane Walker ran workshops and performed during the festival day while up-and-coming local teen band Centre Excuse got everyone on their feet during the musical interludes.

More than 80 people came along to enjoy what was on offer.

The Lyric Lounge now moves to the Drill Hall in Lincoln on Saturday August 27. Again there will be a blend of words and music, with Lemn Sissay, Jean ‘Binta’ Breeze, Michael Brome aka Sureshot, The Ventriloquist, Tongue Fu Band and Charity Shop DJ offering a combination of performance, workshops, music and opportunities to share work.

They will be joined by young people from the Lincoln Youth Slam Group.

Through workshops, performance opportunities and appearances by established poets such as John Agard, Polarbear Daljit Nagra, Lyric Lounge Nottingham attracted and engaged artists, young people, writers and literature fans alike.
